Skirt Club was initiated in London in 2014 by Genevieve LeJeune, and is coming to Sydney in June this year. The idea originated after LeJeune attended ‘play parties’ with a male ex and realised that she was always doing things for his pleasure instead of her own.
She realised sexual empowerment is not about being with another woman to turn your partner on but about exploring what excites you.
The club is designed by women for women and involves free-flowing champagne, burlesque performers and “much more” away from male prying eyes.
“Skirt Club parties are designed to facilitate one night of consensual experimentation – no consequences, no questions,” director and co-owner Renee Nyx tells SBS.
There are now about 5000 members – most in the UK and others in New York and Miami. Sydney already has 50 members signed up. Skirt Club says its members are “life’s high achievers and risk takers”.
Their mission is to liberate women from life’s perceived boundaries. They claim that 90 per cent of women are curious about other women, and so they provide an opportunity for women to liberate themselves.
Nyx explains that LeJeune believes in the link between high risk and high intelligence. Smart sex is about honesty, trust, respect and discretion.
“Skirt Club is a lifestyle brand with mind-awakening events and conversation that brings empowerment for women,” Nyx says.
Being a Sydney-sider herself Nyx says, “Sydney women deserve to feel special and that’s quite frankly what we specialise in”.
“There just isn’t an active community for bi-curious or bisexual women in Sydney and so the feedback from our founding members has been overwhelmingly positive.”
One of the newest Australian members, Pascall, wrote to Nyx saying, “Thanks for accepting me into this amazing club! It is the best thing to come to Australia ever! Life begins from here!”
Skirt Club is for ladies only because it hosts a private members network for the curious kind; both in mind and sexuality.
Sydney’s Skirt Club will launch on Wednesday June 29 at the Beauchamp Hotel’s Velvet Lounge in Darlinghurst.
