The 37-year-old enjoyed eight trophy-laden seasons with Barcelona between 2008 and 2016, where he established himself as one of the best full-backs in world football.

Alves amassed over 390 appearances for the Catalan club and was often tasked with stopping Cristiano Ronaldo during their Clasico encounters against Real Madrid.

Though the Brazilian enjoyed the advantage over Los Blancos, no player caused him more problems than their famous number seven.

"He never made me really suffer because I was focused, but the most difficult opponent I've faced has been Cristiano Ronaldo, without any doubt," Alves told Hoy no se sale.

"He's that type of opponent that you have to be 100 per cent focused on, if you are at 99 per cent he will ruin you and will make you look silly.

"When I was with Guardiola, I think I made him suffer more than he did me."

Following brief stints with Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, Alves ended his 17-year stay in Europe with a move to Sao Paulo in 2019.
