UK tabloid The Daily Mail has faced backlash after identifying Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone as a "female companion" in an article about Novak Djokovic a bar in LA.

The article, which has since been updated, originally referred to Padukone as a "leggy brunette", described her dress as a "flirty frock", for which they were quickly taken to task by Twitter.

Before long, the actress - who is in LA to film her Hollywood debut xXx: The Return of Xander Cage - was trending on Twitter.

Before being edited, the article also implied that the pair did not want to be photographed leaving the bar together, despite the fact that Djokovic and Padukone have been friends for years.

Here they are together, after playing an exhibition tennis match with Roger Federer in 2014:

And here's a shot of Padukone with Djokovic's wife in 2015.

"Novak's 'mystery friend' looks pretty darned familiar," quipped one Twitter user, while another flipped the faux pas, tweeting "Deepika Padukone leaves pub with mystery companion. Rumoured to be of Serbian origin, the leggy brunette was in casual denims."

At least the Daily Mail will be able to identify her next time.
