Afro hair is something to be celebrated and a digital artist has taken a unique approach to doing so in a new photo series.

Pierre Jean-Louis uses the Englight picture app to superimpose breath-taking scenes of the universe and natural world into the hair of models with African heritage to show that natural is always beautiful.

Entire forests, beds of blooming flowers and images of distant galaxies are weaved in amongst the women’s curls to create a truly magical effect.

The US-based artist’s series is aptly named “Black Girl Magic” and he tells SBS, “I started creating these beautiful pictures last year around September when I started following some amazing accounts on Instagram which have nothing but beautiful black queens rocking their natural hair.

"I was amazed to see how so many black women are finally letting go of their insecurities and accept themselves for who they are. #Goddess."

He adds, "I started this series to let every black queens/princess with natural hair know that we black men appreciate their natural melanin beauty more than they can even imagine. I want them to know that it's okay to go all natural."

English student Dazhané Leah, has created similar photos as part of a larger project that explores "black power" through photography.

She tells SBS: "Black power to me means celebrating and being unapologetic for everything that makes black people who we are - our culture, fashion hair etc. Black power as a concept was always something I wanted to explore with photography.

“I decided to use my social media following to get people involved - I asked for muses and asked people what black power meant to them. From everyone's interpretation of the phrase I was able to translate their words into my art."

Other examples from her project include these portraits:
