A hijab wearing beauty vlogger is the newest ambassador for global makeup brand CoverGirl.
Nura Afia stars in a #LashEquality mascara campaign alongside Katy Perry and Sofia Vergara and is thrilled that the face of beauty in the West is becoming more and more diverse.
She tells Refinery29, "I [grew] up being insecure about wearing the hijab. I never thought I would see Muslim women represented on such a large scale.”
“I hope [this campaign] will show Muslim women that brands care about us as consumers and we're important, especially hijabis. [We] can be featured on TV, [we] can be featured on billboards in Times Square. [We] can be represented."
Nura, who has over 300 thousand followers on Instagram, regularly shares beauty tutorials on YouTube.
Covergirl is joining a larger push in for the beauty and fashion industries to be more inclusive. Rival brand Maybelline this year appointed their first Asian ambassador in Taiwanese model I-Hua Wu alongside fellow recent signing Herieth Paul.
