Cory Bernardi has taken a recent, uncharacteristic liking to Twitter and it may have to do with whom he follows.

Liberal senator and staunch conservative Cory Bernardi has been a rather prolific force on Twitter these past months. But we've recently observed something unusual about his profile.

Though he has over 19,000 followers, he only follows one person: US Republican Presidential nominee Donald J Trump.

Trump does not follow him back.

The former frontbencher has been stateside representing Australia as part of a three-month UN secondment in New York. During his time there, Sen Bernardi has been very vocal about his support for Mr Trump

"Donald Trump is not my ideal candidate, he's not conservative enough for me," Senator Bernardi tells ABC radio. "[Ms Clinton's] not prepared to make the changes I think America needs and I think Donald Trump is the person who is going to shake the system up and try and implement some change."

Sen Bernardi has also made a point of tweeting in support of the former reality TV star, especially as the US election draws nearer.

Labor senator Penny Wong has since said on ABC News Radio that she's asked Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to pull Sen Bernardi "into line", believing it is "completely inappropriate" for any Australian politician to be advocating support for either US Presidential candidate at this moment.
