A video of Donald Trump’s granddaughter reciting poetry in Mandarin is going viral in China.
Nine months after the footage of five-year-old Arabella Kushner celebrating Chinese New Year with her mother Ivanka Trump was first shared on Instagram, it’s being circulated with fervour on Wiebo (China’s answer to Twitter) where it’s been viewed over eight million times.
In it, Arabella is seen dressed in a traditional red outfit while standing against a backdrop of Chinese decorations.
The accompanying caption reads, “Arabella wanted to have a pre-bedtime #ChineseNewYear party this past Sunday evening. She got all dressed up and performed songs and poems for Jared, Joseph and me. It was pretty adorable.”
The poem she recites is Li Shen’s "Sympathy for Peasants", which describes the hard work that goes into every grain of rice you eat and is one regularly taught in Chinese primary schools.
While feelings towards President-Elect Trump were uncertain in China throughout the election race, social media users seem taken with his granddaughter’s impressive Mandarin.
One Weibo user writes, “Trump’s granddaughter is welcome to come to China to learn Chinese!” according to BuzzFeed, while another says, “He got his granddaughter to learn Chinese to find out whether Chinese people are badmouthing him.”
Arabella is Ivanka Trump and New York businessman Jared Kushner’s first of three children, and one of Donald Trump’s eight grandchildren.
She started Mandarin lessons young and another Instagram video sees her practicing a children's song.
