Any mother who has been made to feel ashamed for breastfeeding in public will relate to a powerful new video about the discrimination and double standards that nursing women can face.
British spoken work poet Holly McNish's poem 'Embarrassed' first went viral in 2013, and now she has partnered with UK production company Independent Films to produce a short film with director Jake Dypka. The final product was showcased at the Saatchi and Saatchi new Directors showcase at Cannes Lions 2016 earlier this year.
McNish was first inspired to write the poem while sitting in a public toilet while breastfeeding her child. "I wrote this poem in a public toilet after my six month old baby fell asleep," McNish writes in the video's description on her Youtube channel.
With vivid descriptions of the cramped, isolated and at-times disgusting experience of feeding your child in a toilet cubicle, McNish calls out everything from the double standards of living in a society with "billboards covered in tits" to the marketing techniques of baby formula companies.
