It isn’t always the neatest time of the month, but women may soon be able to look online for a significantly less messy approach to having sex on their periods. A new company out of the US is promising couples cleaner sheets with the help of their innovative disk-shaped device which is designed to temporarily block the flow of menstrual blood.
FLEX is a disposable product that when inserted, moulds to fit the shape of the cervix, and can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time. Although originally designed simply as an alternative for tampons, pads or cups, founder and CEO Lauren Schulte hopes the product will empower users who currently avoid being intimate while menstruating to feel more at ease - and make things a whole lot less sticky for those who already do.
"I started FLEX with a mission to create positive, engaging conversations about women’s bodies," she says. "We took major issue with the products available to us - but more importantly, we were upset by the conversations being had about menstruation."
"We believe that a lot of stigma about women’s periods is driven by lack of education. And we believe women are yearning to feel more comfortable during their periods, and that better products, engaging conversations, and a deeper understanding of her body will create positive change."
Ms Schulte adds that, "Women spend almost a quarter of their lives menstruating, and if we can help make women feel even slightly less ashamed about her body during this time, we’ve accomplished our mission."
While sure to be a revolutionary idea for many, the product does not work as a contraceptive or protect against STIs but can be used with a traditional condom. It is scheduled to become available in the US in late September (with worldwide shipping being rolled out shortly afterwards) when ladies can expect to pay around US$15 for three disks.
