The Australian women's sevens team have moved a step closer to claiming a first World Series crown with a 24-19 over New Zealand in the final of the Atlanta leg of the competition.

Australia lead the series with just two rounds remaining, picking up 20 competition points for the win in the US.

The victory over the Kiwis followed 26-14 victory over Canada in the semi-finals and a 22-5 quarter-final win over the USA.

"I'm so proud of the team and with our experienced players who played a lot of minutes," said coach Tim Walsh.

"They had to find ways to adapt their game, particularly today, with the amount of time they were on the pitch."

Emma Tonegato named MVP

Outside back Emma Tonegato was named player of the tournament in Atlanta after racking up 10 tries.

"Emma was absolutely world class in this tournament. She was packing in scrums, she was out on the wing ... she demonstrated an array of skills and is a valued member of this squad," Walsh said.
