As much as there is regular discussion about the amount of coverage of women's sport, there is less talk about the lack of sports themed TV shows sports featuring a female lead.

In fact, you can count the number of shows on one hand and that is why there is some buzz about the new FOX series Pitch.

Not only is the lead a female athlete, a baseball pitcher, but a pitcher playing in the men's Major League Baseball (gasp!).

Pitch tells the story of the fictional Ginny Baker who becomes the first woman to pitch in the MLB for (real team) San Diego Padres.

“The amount of attention that would come with a woman breaking this barrier in one of the four professional sports is a big part of our story; it's not just about baseball. It's about celebrity, fame and self-belief and self-worth.” - Dan Fogelman

While Pitch may be fictional, writer and producer Dan Fogelman was inspired by the real life story of baseball sensation Mo’Ne Davis. At 13, Davis became the first girl to win a Little League World Series game.

Pitch will air on Tuesday nights in the USA later this year.  Let's hope Australians will get the chance to see it!
