Welcome to today’s issue of Zela. I am so stoked to be guest editor and cannot wait to hear your thoughts on some of our topics.
With the Olympics quickly approaching it is a chance for our female sports people to capitalise on media attention that may be rare in their particular sports. I find it funny that some people think we all only compete once a year, when realistically there are events on constantly that go unreported. In saying this though, that is why the Olympics is so special because it has the ability to polarise the world. I remember when an Aussie competed, my teachers at school would stop class just so we could all watch the event. It really captivates the nation and is exciting for everyone.
In this issue we will cover the awesome sport of hockey, and have an exclusive interview with superstar goalkeeper Rachel Lynch about how she has become so successful both on and off the field. We will look at some of the differences in the men’s and women’s game. Remember when the Matilda’s lost to an underage football team? Well it may come as no surprise then that the Hockeyroos actually play an U18s state team for practice too. We will look at 'marketability’ and how this is a part of female sport, and why people promoting their sports can cop backlash for it.
I chose to cover these issues because they are relevant to myself as a female athlete playing a sport that is not in the media as much as we would like it to be. With the Olympics coming up there will be much more attention for all athletes and it is a really good time to show your talent and be heard. I hope you get a little insight into the world of hockey and enjoy today's stories!
