Part 3 - Is our Federal system working?

Speaking to SBS Dutch, Dr Woldring says we have to ask, does Australia need so many governments, parliaments and public services to govern 24 million people?

He says we now have 859 politicians, 633 in states and 226 in Canberra. He says 400 politicians in Canberra could do the job.

Dr Woldring says self interest of state politicians and the major political parties is in the way of real reform.

More Decentralisation?

He points out that there is poor use of living space in Australia and growing traffic congestion in major cities is because of growing concentration of population.

With most population living in the cities, Dr Woldring says Australia's population could be wiped out in a nuclear attack.

The Turnbull Government supports decentralisation and a new committee of 10 MPs is examining the potential to relocate government agencies and functions from the cities.
