In the Sydney suburb of Lakemba ‘Independence Day Celebrations’ have been held at the Canterbury City Community Centre.
14th August is the official day of independence of Pakistan but activities start early in the month and several community groups host local programs, musical nights and entertainment activities to celebrate the independence of the South Asian nation.
Community worker from Lakemba Community Markets, Romana Waseem said that while it is a special celebration for Pakistani Community, there were lots of activities for all the communities, at Lakemba Community Markets ‘Independence Day Celebration’.
“This year there were many free activities to enjoy. Tea (Kashmiri Chai), cake, juice & lolly bags were the main features including several food stalls that catered to the community members who came to celebrate the festive day.
Kids activities included face painting and fun activities by performers while there was a jumping castle which the children loved.
Locals came and enjoyed the park atmosphere while various stalls sold Pakistani items including clothing, artefacts and jewellery.”
Romana said that most of most stallholders are local women and the majority are from a Pakistani background.
“60% of stall holders are Pakistani women so it’s also a great opportunity to come together.”
Munazza Taj one of the many Pakistani stallholders said, “It’s a great day and a lovely opportunity to celebrate with others. “
