Shamsher is a journalist with over 15 years’ experience with major news television networks in India and overseas. Before moving to Australia in January 2015, he worked with India’s most watched English news channel, Times Now as the Bureau Head at Chandigarh, reporting extensively from the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. He has also worked in London for a year in 2005-06 where he had a brief stint at the BBC as well.
Known for his courageous journalism, Shamsher has reported on a variety of issues, from different settings. From the volatile Line-of-Control in Kashmir to central India’s coal-rich areas where the mafia rules the roost- his camera and microphone have captured the unpalatable sights and sounds to tell the untold stories. The encounters in the Kashmir valley, the human misery at the borders shared by hostile nations, the men and women who became collateral damage of the insurgency in Kashmir and Punjab, he has witnessed and reported it all.
As a journalist based in Chandigarh, Shamsher has had the ringside view of the vexatious political manoeuvrings in Punjab through many a turbulent time. He has been in thick of the action during many important stories such as the infamous ‘Dera-Sikh’ showdown of 2007, the ‘Rajoana’ episode etc. besides the state assembly and three general elections in India.
While his reports exposed political nepotism, opportunism and corruption, he has also extensively covered the socio-economic issues in Northern India. He has reported about issues ranging from the farmers' suicides and female foeticide in Punjab to the opprobrious honour killings and the Khap Panchayats in Haryana.
Despite having moved thousands of miles away to Australia, his core journalistic values remain to respect and give voice to the most vulnerable and oppressed.
At SBS Punjabi, his endeavour is to bring Punjab to the Punjabis and strengthen their voice by bringing the most accurate and unbiased news stories and the account of events that matter the most.
