A Tamil asylum seeker, Thayalan Janarth, in his 20s, has doused himself in petrol and then set himself alight. The young man is in Sydney's Concord Hospital with 98 per cent burns. His act of self-immolation came after being informed that his appeal for refugee status had been rejected. Our presenter, Kulasegaram Sanchayan, talks to Bala Vigneswaran, Refugee Action Coordinator for Australian Tamil Congress; Rev Dr John Jegasothy, a long-term activist on refugee matters; and three friends of Thayalan Janarth.
