  • Send to a friend
  • This documentary reviews how Virginia's Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in the United States in 1607, and recounts how Captain John Smith and other English settlers came to America to hunt for exploitable resources. It also recounts how Smith came to be captured by the Indians and eventually taken to their political centre, Werowocomoco. Smith's writings, 17 years after these events, explain that Pocahontas saved his life from Chief Powhatan. Archaeologists trace where the Werowocomoco site was and document key findings indicating the location of the longhouse. They also find copper at the longhouse which is processed by scientists and found to be English copper. (From the US, in English) (Documentary) PG CC WS

  • 20:30Tiananmen Square: The Tank Man
  • Send to a friend
  • On June 5, 1989, one day after Chinese troops expelled thousands of demonstrators from Tiananmen Square in Beijing, a solitary, unarmed protester stood his ground before a column of tanks advancing down the Avenue of Eternal Peace. Captured by Western photographers watching nearby, this confrontation became an icon of the fight for freedom around the world. This documentary investigates this mystery man - his identity, his fate, and his significance to the Chinese leadership. The search for the tank man reveals China's startling social compact - its embrace of capitalism while squashing dissent - designed to stifle the nationwide unrest of 1989. (From the US, in English and Mandarin, English subtitles) (Documentary) (Rpt) M (A,V) CC WS
