  • Peasant Forts - The Hakkas who live in southeast China on a few hundred square kilometres of land have devised a unique architecture for their farms: they're huge circular fortified buildings several storeys high and made up of hundreds of rooms.Made of clay and small stones they were designed originally to protect their dwellers against wild animals and attacks from neighbouring populations. The residents of a fortress are all said to have a common ancestor and have the same surname. The fortified farms vary in size. That of the Sou family is one of the largest and houses 350 people. The 96-room Vou fortress on the other hand is only occupied by a family of four the rest of the clan having decided to give up farming and move away from the area. The Amalfi Coast - Not so long ago, you could meet Sophia Loren or Mick Jagger in Positano on the Amalfi Coast. But about fifty years ago, Positano was a mere fishing village, until it was discovered by writers and painters, and eventually the rich and famous. It all began in the 19th century when Goethe wrote his "Travels in Italy" - no other European culture held such appeal as the culture of Mediterranean Italy. But Giulio, a bus driver on the Amalfitana, speaks of the problems such appeal can bring these days, and how the stream of visitors or, worse in his eyes, the foreigners who settle along the coast, can damage the local traditions and values. Presented by Silvio Rivier. (From Germany, in German, English subtitles) (Documentary Series) (Rpt) G CC

  • Send to a friend
  • Ever wonder what happened to past winners of Eurovision? It's fair to say not all of them have enjoyed the success of bands like ABBA, who won the song contest in 1974. What about the winners of other competitions such as Australian Idol, or Pop Stars? Following the first round of Semi Finals of the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, SBS Television will screen Solo: The Decline of a Pop Star at 10pm on Friday May 23. The documentary follows the rise and subsequent fall of Jon Noergaard, the 2002 Danish Pop Star winner. Jon won Pop Stars as a naive 17-year- old, and went from being a nobody to somebody and back to a nobody in just a few short years. (From Denmark, in Danish, English subtitles) (Documentary) CC WS
