A medical placement is a daunting task for any young doctor. But what’s it like for an Indigenous medical student in one of Australia’s most remote hospitals, helping some of the country’s most vulnerable people? There are just over 200 Indigenous Australian doctors. We need almost 3000 to achieve population parity. Experts say Indigenous doctors have a vital role in closing the health gap. But how do these doctors make a difference in their communities? Through the eyes of a young Indigenous medical student based in Derby in the Kimberly region of WA, we see why Indigenous doctors are so desperately needed.
