Budget 2009 will be critical for the future of SBS and its role in protecting and promoting Australia’s cultural and creative diversity.

“While Budget 2008 didn’t contain any new money for key SBS initiatives such as digital television content, SBS is looking forward to working with the Australian Government on a comprehensive triennial funding strategy for the 2009 Budget,” SBS Managing Director Shaun Brown said.

“As we head towards 2009 the new Government has an historic opportunity to look at the role of public broadcasting in Australia and the serious civic, cultural and creative contribution that SBS makes.

“Australia benefits greatly from the presence of two national broadcasters and it would be a terrible outcome for the Australian community if that contribution was diminished due to lack of funds.

“By appropriately equipping SBS for the future, SBS can, in turn, positively contribute to the Government’s broader agenda including the promotion of social inclusion, the fostering of creative industries and the growth of the digital economy.

“SBS exists to be different, to broadcast a range of views and provide plurality in the Australian media industry. Our ability to continue to contribute will be constrained if SBS is not adequately resourced.

“The Government has expressed its support for SBS and on behalf of SBS and its audience I will continue to lobby for substantial funding support for our ambitious agenda.”
