NITV announces further commitment to the remote Indigenous production sector at the 18th National Remote Indigenous Media Festival
NITV 2016 Spirit Initiative winner announced as Viviana Petyarre from CAAMA media
NITV announced its further commitment to the remote Indigenous production sector at this week’s Remote Indigenous Media Festival, revealing the winner of the inaugural Spirit Initiative and calling for submissions for a fifth series of the short-documentary initiative, Our Stories.
Announced in the Northern Territory’s Yirrkala community, the Spirit Initiative, which includes a placement with NITV and an Our Stories commission, recognised the work of Viviana Petyarre from the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA). Viviana impressed judges with her pitch to create a film based on travels from Alice Springs to Utopia, to visit her three nanas and learn about her ancestors.
Viviana said: “Winning the NITV Spirit Initiative is an amazing opportunity, and I am super excited about the opportunities it provides.”
Short-documentary initiative, Our Stories, which aims to share the history, culture and language of Indigenous Australia through stories of elders, youth and communities, was also announced for a fifth series.
For the first time NITV has called for films which explore one of four themes: Celebration, Love, Respect and Inspiration. The series will welcome a further 45 works for 2017, engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander filmmakers from across Australia.
Tanya Denning-Orman, NITV Channel Manager, said: “Storytelling is at the core of NITV and we are proud to support Indigenous filmmakers from the remote sector to share their remarkable stories with our Indigenous communities and wider Australia.”
The 2016 Festival was hosted by the Indigenous Remote Communications Association (IRCA), in partnership with the Yirrkala community and the Top End Aboriginal Bush Broadcasting Association (TEABBA).
