Statement from NITV on the passing of Andrew Krakouer
1 April, 2025
Over the last day here at NITV, we’ve been processing the devastating news about the loss of our colleague and friend. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Andrew Krakouer, a beloved figure in the world of AFL football, a cherished member of our broadcasting family, and a proud Minang (Nyoongar) and Inggarda (Yamatji) man.
Born into the famous Krakouer footballing family, Andrew’s talent was undeniable. He made his mark in the AFL with Richmond and Collingwood, dazzling fans with his skill, vision, and tenacity. His 2011 season with Collingwood in particular, culminating in a Grand Final appearance and the Mark of the Year award, cemented his reputation as one of the game’s most electrifying players. Yet, his contributions to the sport and the community extended far beyond the boundary line.
Andrew’s presence at NITV was deeply felt, particularly through his work on The Marngrook Footy Show and Yokayi Footy. As a co-host, he brought warmth, deep football knowledge, and an undeniable passion for sharing First Nations perspectives on the game he loved. His ability to connect with people—whether in the studio, at grassroots footy carnivals, or in community spaces—was a testament to his character. He embodied the spirit of Indigenous storytelling, always championing the next generation and uplifting voices that needed to be heard.
Through every triumph and challenge, Andrew’s resilience shone through. He was more than just a footballer; he was a mentor, a role model, a cultural leader and most importantly a strong family man – who carried the hopes and stories of our people with pride. His journey resonated far beyond sport, touching the hearts of those who knew him personally and those who admired him from afar.
Andrew Krakouer will be deeply missed, but his legacy—as a player, presenter, and proud Nyoongar man—will live on. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the countless lives he impacted.
Rest easy, brother. Your story will forever be part of ours. We were lucky to know you.
