Cultural celebrations

SBS is committed to engaging and inspiring all Australians in the shared project of building a more cohesive and inclusive society. As part of our Community Impact plan, we support the key cultural celebrations of Diwali/Deepavali, Ramadan & Eid al-Fitr, Lunar New Year, and NAIDOC Week with annual feasts of multi-lingual cross-platform content, community partnerships, and educational resources.

Diwali/Deepavali
The Festival of Lights is celebrated by over a billion people globally, including more than a million Australians. This important celebration is called Diwali, Deepavali, Bandi Chhor Diwas and Tihar, depending on which culture you are from.
Ramadan & Eid
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, prayer and community observed by more than 800,000 Australians of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year is one of the most important celebrations for many East and South-East Asian cultures and observed by more than a quarter of the world’s population. This year is the Year of the Dragon.

NAIDOC Week
A landmark annual event for all Australians, National NAIDOC Week celebrates First Nations peoples’ achievements and excellence, with SBS and NITV playing a vital role in championing stories of strength, growing understanding and connection, and instilling shared pride.
