Charley Boorman travels from Sydney to Tokyo with a selection of locals who help him seek out unique stories and characters along the way.

This epic journey aptly displays the wealth of culture that can be encountered along the Sydney to Tokyo route.

From Sydney, Charley hitchhikes up the east coast of Australia to Byron Bay and experiences life with the Royal Flying doctors as they visit their Aboriginal outback clinics, before flying up the Cape York peninsular on a marine survey plane and hopping over to Papua New Guinea.

In Papua New Guinea, Charley experiences the variety that this country has to offer, while continuing his challenging journey – from visiting tribes deep within the jungle with an anthropologist to sailing along the coast in a banana boat.

Then it’s on to Indonesia and the Konjo boat builders of Sulawesi and the bizarre funeral rites of the Toraja people. After crossing over to the Philippines Charley joins the Navy on one of their sea patrols and joins a ride with a local biker gang called the Mad Dogs.

The journey continues, and as Charley reaches Taiwan, he experiences the contrasts between Taiwan’s ultra-modern bullet train and its rugged mountainous dirt tracks. Finishing in Japan, Charley travels in the uniquely Japanese Deco Truck, before riding into Tokyo on Japan’s most famous form of transport – the motorcycle.

This epic journey aptly displays the wealth of culture that can be encountered along the Sydney to Tokyo route, while Charley’s relaxed style and quick humour ensures that there are plenty of laughs along the way.
