Greg Mclean's Wolf Creek 2 has taken the top spot at the Australian box office in its opening weekend, with the gross-out slasher movie grossing over $1.7 million.

The film sequel has taken 35 percent more than its original, which benefitted from strong word of mouth in the weeks following its 2005 release.

Roadshow Films released Wolf Creek 2 in Australia last Thursday against the Mark Wahlberg Navy SEAL action drama Lone Survivor, which came in second with $1.4 million.

The week's limited arthouse film releases - the French-set Brit comedy drama Le Week-end . Alexander Payne's Oscar contender Nebraska , took $56,450 and $21,015 respectively, on a smaller number of screens.

Roadshow Films managing director Joel Pearlman said that the film's stellar opening weekend "is particularly exciting for a local production".
