The release of the trailer and promotional posters for upcoming Chinese war blockbuster 'Cairo Declaration' has drawn large-scale attention to the film, but for all the wrong reasons.
First-time director Liu Xing's new movie gives Chairman Mao a greater role in historical meetings with international leaders during WWII, appearing to show him at the 1943 Cairo conference with then US President Franklin Roosevelt and UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
However Mao wasn't the Chinese representative at the conference - considered significant in strengthening ties in their war against Japan - Chiang Kai-shek was.
Social media users have responded by making their own versions of the posters. Including with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
And Wan Dang, a leader of the Chinese democracy movement during the Tiananmen Square protests.
The company behind the film has links to military funding in China, according to The Guardian, and will be released as the country celebrates the 70th anniversary of Japan's surrender.
