Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has finally overtaken Kevin Rudd as preferred prime minister, while Labor support has also fallen, just days before the election, the latest Newspoll shows.

Voter support for Mr Abbott is 43 per cent (up three percentage points) compared to the prime minister's 41 per cent (down three points), the first time Mr Abbott has led Mr Rudd in their four-year rivalry, The Australian newspaper says.

Labor's primary vote is at its lowest under Mr Rudd's leadership at 33 per cent.

That's just one point below the party's March rating under former leader Julia Gillard.

The coalition's primary vote is on 46 per cent, down one point since last weekend's poll.

The two-party preferred vote shows Labor on 46 per cent, compared to the coalition's 54 per cent, with Labor facing a swing against it of four percentage points since the 2010 election, the paper says.

This would result in the loss of 14 seats, including that of former treasurer Wayne Swan and Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury.
