This year the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week showcased its first ever runway of handmade Indigenous creations.

Docklands on the Yarra River in Melbourne was the location where unearthing Indigenous fashion was showcased last night.

Models, designers, artists and stylists ranged in years of experience but were all participating for the first time in such a culturally significant event.

This years theme was ‘Generations,’ so all participants agreed that the show was an opportunity for them to take their experience to a whole new level of exploration.

Australia's first Indigenous supermodel and former Sapphire, Loise Peeler kicked off the show in style.

Each year, Indigenous Unearthed founders Tina Waru and Wayne Quilliam have worked towards building a stronger Australian Indigenous fashion industry.

This year, fashions included many traditional elements, swimwear, cocktail dresses, couture, evening wear and shoes.

In addition, designers such as Leone Dembski, Janene, Colleen Tighe Johnson and Domonic Intent all had their spring collections on display.

It is hoped that events like these will prompt professional development opportunities for young Indigenous people aspiring towards a career in the fashion industry.
