Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has paid tribute to SBS, saying the multilingual broadcaster is playing a large role in fostering social cohesion in a multicultural society.

In an address to SBS staff, Mr Turnbull said Australia had the most successful multicultural society in the world.

He also said SBS has played a key role in that success by promoting cultural harmony over many years in Australia.

“SBS is not the only glue in this particular exercise, but an important part of the glue that binds our multicultural society together, that ensures that the benefits of multiculturalism are shared by everybody and that we are all beneficiaries of each other’s' cultural backgrounds.”
