Murri woman arrested and jailed in Bolivia

A Murri woman from Brisbane is seeking help from the Australian government after she was arrested and jailed for alleged drug offenses in Bolivia.

Two jailed for $173m cocaine importation

A 24-year-old Murri woman has been found with cocaine in Bolivia.

Family representatives of 24-year-old Alana Miles have called for help from the Australian government after hearing she could spend up to ten years in prison.

Ms Miles wanted to travel the world and catch up with friends she'd met on the internet to celebrate going into remission after suffering Leukaemia as a child.

She met a Nigerian friend in Malaysia, before going to meet another Nigerian male friend in Bolivia.

At the airport in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a search of her backpack found an amount of cocaine.

Ms Miles’s Nigerian friend still hasn't been located.

Her sister Kylie Miles said Ms Miles has been set up by the people she trusted online and is expected to face court.

"Best case scenario she’s released from the prison, then she goes into what they call a marriage, but they’re actually under some type of house arrest supervision by a married man, and it’s that married man that needs to watch over her and make sure she doesn’t do wrong for up to 12 months," Kylie Miles said.

She added that her sister is unable to manage her diabetes effectively in prison conditions.

Kylie Miles has been raising funds via Facebook for legal fees and has called on the Australian Government for more help.

In a statement to the media, the Department of Foreign Affairs says consular officials have visited Ms Miles several times and made it clear to Bolivian authorities that she be granted due process.
