Human rights activists are calling on the Abbott government to put pressure on Nauru to reconsider a massive visa fee hike for journalists.

Nauru, which hosts of one of Australia's immigration detention centres, will increase the price of media visas from $200 to $8000.

Nauru says the move is a revenue-raising measure.

Human Rights Watch Australian director Elaine Pearson told Thea Cowie the fee hike is concerning.
