It's that time of year again. The red carpets are rolling about as quickly as the film reels, as the 71st annual Golden Globes kicks off the 2014 award season.

Going into Monday's show in Beverly Hills "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" have the most nominations with seven nods each, followed by five for the black-and-white road movie "Nebraska."

It's another strong field in the dramatic category, with 3D space drama "Gravity," Somali piracy tale "Captain Phillips," and Martin Scorsese's scandalous "The Wolf of Wall Street."

This year's Australian contingent sees Cate Blanchett up for best actress in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" and Sydney -based director Jane Campion nominated for best mini- series for "Top of the Lake".

On the small screen, Netflix's pioneering "House of Cards" could win more gold, as could "Breaking Bad" following its September finale.

If you're one of those film buffs who reckons you've got all the answers for who will win, you may want to compare notes with a new app by TheCredits.org.

This one builds on a version that predicted 83% of 2013's Oscar winners after surveying social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest for any public mentions relating to the nominees.
