The federal government has confirmed it will be attempting to scale back the World Heritage listing of Tasmania's forests.

Environment Minister, Greg Hunt says the government will put forward a proposal to change the 170,000 hectare extension, which was approved less than a year ago under the previous Labor government.

Greens Party Leader, Christine Milne says she has written to the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations, asking for rejection of the government's submission, which is due to be filed next week.

She told Naomi Selvaratnam the UNESCO committee will be shocked by the government's request to change the boundaries, and that it could severely damage Australia's international reputation.
