A specialist in refugee law says an Immigration Department computer security breach potentially strengthens the cases of asylum seekers who have had their identities revealed.
The Department has admitted to the breach, following news reports the full names, nationalities and boat arrival details of up to 10,000 asylum seekers were published online.
Daniel Webb from the Human Rights Law Centre in Melbourne says the asylum seekers may well be able to seek protection by relying on the legal concept known as 'sur place'.
He spoke with Greg Dyett.
