A Cambodian community group says the Australian government should drop any plans it might have to send asylum seekers to Cambodia.

Cambodia's Foreign Minister Hor Namhong has confirmed that his Australian counterpart, Julie Bishop, raised the issue during a meeting on the weekend.

Ms Bishop is refusing to be drawn on whether it's being considered saying only that she discussed challenges facing the region, including people smuggling.

The President of the Cambodian Association of Victoria, Youhorn Chea, says Cambodia is too poor to accept refugees.

"If they go to Cambodia they did not have any money to look after those people and they did not have any land because at the moment the land in Cambodia is very, very small and the citizen, the Cambodian citizen did not have enough land to survive as well. How should they go to support the refugee from outside?"
