The Greek Football Federation on Thursday confirmed that national team coach Fernando Santos will quit his post after his contract expires at the end of this year's World Cup.
"The immediate priority now is to find the right leadership for the national team for a smooth transition by September in order for the team to seek qualification for Euro 2016," read a statement issued by federation president Giorgos Sarris, who also emphasised his backing for the Portuguese in the meantime.
The 59-year-old Santos has been linked with a return to club management, with his former Greek club PAOK believed to be interested.
He has coached Greece since 2010, when he replaced the veteran German Otto Rehhagel, who led the team to a surprise triumph at Euro 2004.
The former Porto and AEK Athens boss has overseen just four defeats in his 41 matches at the helm, leading Greece to 12th in the FIFA rankings.
He guided Greece to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 before taking the team to the World Cup finals in Brazil thanks to a play-off win against Romania in November.
