An Adelaide Catholic priest has pleaded guilty to accessing and possessing child pornography.

Father Stanislaus Hogan, 69, of Sevenhill, appeared in the Adelaide magistrates court on Thursday.

He pleaded guilty to an aggravated count of possessing child pornography and to a count of using a carriage service to access child pornography at Athelstone between April 20 and June 10 2012.

Hogan will be arraigned in the District Court on April 7.

Saint Ignatius' College in Adelaide later confirmed that Father Stan Hogan was a former member of its staff.

In a statement, it said neither charge was connected with anyone within the college, including past or present students.

"Father Hogan was suspended from all duties at Saint Ignatius' College as soon as these matters were brought to the attention of Jesuit authorities last August," the statement said.

"The welfare of the College community remains our most important priority.

"Our students have always been, and always will be, our most precious gift and we will continue to do everything we can to protect and nurture them.

"Our policies and protocols for child protection are available on the College's website and these are regularly reviewed against global best practice to ensure they remain world class.

"The College is available to provide full and ongoing care and support to anyone at any time, and encourages anyone with any concerns to contact the College."
