Mr Pato told local media PNG Edge that the government would make public two ongoing investigations into riots at the Manus Island detention centre, which left Iranian asylum seeker Reza Berati dead.

Mr Pato said the government will also commission a Coronor’s inquest into the riot once the investigations had been completed.

“We are trying to exercise leadership in what’s regional and global issues and we want to make sure we are doing what is right by the conventions and international rules and protocols in relation to asylum seekers and refugees, how they should be taken care of,” Mr Pato told PNG Edge.

He said he hoped the reports would be finished within “a reasonable time”, but provided no timeframe.
