Jessica Mauboy will be flying the flag for Australia at the Eurovision competition this year.

The indigenous pop singer will perform live during the second semi-final of Eurovision's 59th instalment in Denmark, which will air on May 10.

"Like so many Aussies, I have loved watching the show from my loungeroom and now to be a part of one of the world's biggest music shows is just incredible," Mauboy said.

While she won't be a competitor, her appearance will mark the first time Australia's been represented at the iconic European singing contest as a guest.

And when the ARIA Award winner gets on stage in Copenhagen in front of an international TV audience estimated at more than 180 million, she'll be the first solo artist from a non-European Union country to do so.

The Darwin songstress, who first shot to stardom as runner-up in 2006's Australian Idol, will perform an original yet-to-be-named song written for the event.

The coup will likely feed Australia's love affair with the kitsch splendour of Eurovision.

The coup comes after SBS, which has broadcast Eurovision for 30 years and which hand-picked Mauboy, approached the European Broadcasting Union with the ambition of increasing Australia's presence at the over-the-top annual contest.

Mauboy has released three studio albums and has also dabbled in acting, featuring in Australian films Bran Nue Dae and and The Sapphires.
