Pilbara's Indigenous kids inspire new comic

A small group of children from Western Australia’s Pilbara region have provided the inspiration for a comic book being launched at the Australian leg of the biggest comic convention in the world.

The annual Oz ComicCon is a platform for people who love pop culture, music, art and cosplay.

Four children from Roebourne were among the attendees in Perth, where they released own comic book with help of some well established artists.

The futuristic comic, titled NEOMAD, follows a group of “techno savvy” heroes from the Pilbara and was created with the help of artists such as Sutu.

“There are three books out now,” he said.

“It’s also available on the IPAD where you can hear the kids voices as they tell you the story and the really important thing is to know these kids have been involved colouring in every single page.”

The NEOMAD project is one example of young people taking the initiative and taking part in the convention.

Wolfgang Bylsma, from Gestalt Comics that publishes the NEOMAD series, said he has already published successful titles full of ethnically diverse characters like The Deep.

He said Gestalt came on board to help launch the digital format of the NEOMAD Comic.

“I think it’s about making the content as accessible as possible what we're doing is making it easier for people to make it to your stories however they prefer,” he said.
