Sydney's One Central Park East tower has been named as one of the world's best skyscrapers.

International construction data company, Emporis, has ranked 300 buildings from around the world according to aesthetic and functional design, with the Chippendale structure, designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel and PTW Architects taking out number 5 by an international jury of architecture  experts.

Work started on the 117 metre residential tower in 2009 and was completed in October 2013.

Emporis notes it for its vertical gardens on each of its 34 floors, giving residents the impression of living in a tree house and for its Yann Karesale LED art instillation which lights up part of the building at night.

The awards have been announced annually since 2000 and are given to buildings completed in the last 12 months that are higher than 100 metres.

London's The Shard, Western Europe's tallest building, took out the top spot, thanks to its unique glass fragment-shaped form, and for what Emprois calls, its sophisticated architectural  implementation.

No North American buildings made the top 10, but last year, Canada's Absolute World 1 in Mississauga was ranked at number 1.
