Members of the Australian-Ukrainian community came together to pay their respects to the 298people, including 28 Australians who died when their plane was shot down over war-torneastern Ukraine on Friday.

St Andrews Catholic Church priest father Simon Ckuj said words fail to express thedevastation felt by all Australians.

"The events of yesterday have affected us deeply. It may have even shaken our faith," he told churchgoers on Saturday.

"But we must never fall to the temptation of revenge."

Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations spokesperson Pete Shmigel called for justice and said the downing of the airliner was an act of tyrant terrorism.

"This is an act of terrorism sponsored by one man and one man alone, Vladimir Putin," Mr Shmigel told reporters.

"We do not believe that someone such as Vladimir Putin, who does not adhere to any international norms or rules, should be welcome at G20."

"If you don't play by the rules, you don't belong at the table."
