Notorious Queensland sex offender Robert John Fardon has been arrested in Brisbane for breaching his supervision order.
The department of corrective services gave no details of the breach.
"He is in custody and the matter will be listed for an initial hearing in the Supreme Court at a date to be determined," the department said in a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon.
Fardon was the first person to be jailed indefinitely in 2003, under Queensland's Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act.
His release in October 2013, prompted by a review of his sentence, was short-lived after the state's attorney general Jarrod Bleijie appealed against the order.
The Liberal National Party had rushed through contentious laws as a "plan B", which gave Mr Bleijie the final decision on the release of Queensland's most dangerous sex offenders. But the court of appeal later scuttled the government's bid to bypass the courts, finding the legislation invalid.
The serial rapist was released again in December and subject to a 24-hour curfew.
He was also forced to wear a tracking device at all times.
Fardon has spent most of his adult life in various jails for offences dating back to the 1960's, when he was 18.
Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnston said she wasn't surprised by the alleged breach.
"I do hope whatever breach it is, that it's enough to get him behind bars again," she told AAP.
Ms Johnston said Fardon should be in prison.
"He is dangerous, he is a recidivist, he is violent, he is every reason that we've got the dangerous prisoners act and the two strikes act now."
Mr Bleijie said it would be inappropriate to comment on specific matters before the court.
"Queensland now has the strongest anti-sex offender legislation in Australia following extensive reforms," he said in a statement.
