Imagine a car that can be made, while you wait, in under two hours. The creators of a world first 3D printed car hope to be able to do this in the not-to-distant future.

Local Motors have already cut down production time to just 44 hours, with their new model the Strati.

Named after the Italian word for 'layer' - the Strati seats two people, has a sleek retractable roof and runs on electric power. It's reaches top speeds of just over 60 kilometres per hour.

Jay Rodgers from Local Motors says the car takes the automotive industry into the future, where it should be.

"I felt incredibly frustrated that despite 100 years of history we weren't able to make cars fast enough," he said.

Would you drive a 3D-printed car?
