Aussie junior wins gold at worlds in Spain

Tasmanian Macey Stewart has won Australia's first gold at the road world championships taking out the junior individual time trial in wet conditions.

Macey Stewart has won Australia's first gold medal at the road cycling world championships in Spain, taking out the junior women's individual time trial.

Fellow Australian Anna-Leeza Hull claimed bronze in Ponferrada on Monday behind Denmark's Pernille Mathiesen.

Tasmanian Stewart, 18, covered the 13.9km course in 20mins 8.39sec to finish 10 seconds ahead of Mathiesen.

NSW rider Hull, 17, was a further three seconds adrift in the wet conditions.

Macey said afterwards she loved racing in the rain so was encouraged by the poor weather.

"To be honest I didn't have this (the win) in my mind at all," the reigning junior national road champion said.

"I was ready to go out there and give it my best but I've just come off track worlds and I hadn't really had the road training background so I didn't have many high expectations.

"To come away with the win ... I just can't believe it."

The 2013 bronze medallist, Alexandra Manly from South Australia, just missed out on repeating this year, finishing 0.5 seconds behind Hull to claim fourth.

Stewart's gold medal continues Australia's great start to the world championships.

Trade outfits Orica-GreenEDGE and Orica-AIS won silver in the men's and women's team time trials on Sunday.

Campbell Flakemore is Australia's only representative in under-23 ITT to be contested later on Monday.
