Australia have finished a creditable seventh in the final of the women's teams event at the gymnastics world championships in China.

Having qualified eighth to grab the final berth in Wednesday night's teams final, the Aussies rose one place in the rankings thanks to strong performances on the beam and uneven bars, in a positive sign ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.

The powerful US outfit dominated the field to romp to the gold medal ahead of China and Russia.

But the Australians were far from disgraced - the effort all the more meritorious given former world champion Lauren Mitchell was a late withdrawal after damaging her ankle in training.

Mary-Anne Monckton and Emma Nedov both registered scores in excess of 14 points on the beam, with the Australians taking the fourth highest combined score on the apparatus during the final.

Commonwealth Games silver medalist Larissa Miller continued her strong form on the uneven bars, registering a 14.700.

Miller (13.300) was also the team's best performer on the floor, and will be hoping to extend her routine even further as the only Australian to qualify for an individual apparatus final.

Georgia-Rose Brown will take part in the individual all-around final on Friday night, having qualified 22nd in the 24-woman field, with Miller's floor final to be held on Sunday afternoon.
