Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will tell a Christian political conference he supports gay marriage.

Mr Shorten has accepted an invitation to address the Australian Christian Lobby national conference in Canberra on Saturday.

The ACL has campaigned strongly to block the passing of marriage equality laws.

A spokesman for Mr Shorten said the Labor leader would be making his views on gay marriage clear to the conference delegates.

"The leader of the opposition speaks to a number of organisations which hold a range of views," the spokesman told AAP on Friday.

"Of course, he does not always agree with all of the views of those organisations he speaks to.

"It is important for the leader of the opposition to speak to the Australian community about what he believes and what Labor's priorities are."

Liberal Democrats senator David Leyonhjelm is working on a new bill to allow same-sex marriage, but won't introduce it until he's reasonably confident the numbers are there to pass it.

The Liberal Party is yet to decide whether to allow a conscience vote on the matter, but Labor MPs have a free vote.

Other speakers at the conference include Liberal frontbencher Michaelia Cash, Labor frontbencher Shayne Neumann and lawyer Roger Kiska from the conservative Christian non-profit body Alliance Defending Freedom.
