Residents have described the "apocalyptic" scene at a Brisbane riverside apartment that had its roof peeled off during a savage supercell storm.

Residents including those from Scenic Point, the complex on Archer Street at Toowong, are surveying the extraordinary damage to their properties.

The apartment complex's metal roof was peeled off and blown more than 100 metres away to nearby Coronation Drive as wind gusts of about 140km/h lashed the city and southeast Queensland on Thursday.

"It looks like the apocalypse," a first-floor resident, who wanted to be known only as Victoria, told AAP on Friday, as she inspected the outside of the building with housemate Skye.

A wooden plank has pierced a bedroom windows of the pair's apartment and the lounge room has been flooded.

"We got really lucky compared to the top floor, so we can't really complain," flatmate Skye said.

One of those living on the top floor is James Marriott. The apartment he shares with three others now has uninterrupted sky views where the roof once was.

Mr Marriott wasn't at home when the roof peeled off but his flatmate was in the kitchen when the terrifying event unfolded.

"He was in the kitchen when the roof came off. He managed to get out with just a little scratch, it's amazing really. He's very lucky," Mr Marriott told AAP earlier on Friday.

He said almost everything in the unit he shares is ruined, but he was lucky as his own room still has a roof.

"As terrible as it is, it's Mother Nature at the end of the day," he said.

Residents of the building have been told power can't be reconnected until the structural damage is fixed and a new roof is built. The building houses a mix of students, retirees and young professionals.
