Call for release of student visa fraud figures

A body representing international students in Australia is calling on the federal government and education providers to release data on student visa fraud.

A News Limited report today claims that over seven thousand student visas were cancelled in the previous financial year, up from close to five thousand a year earlier.

But Thomson Ch'ng (ching) of the Council of International Students Australia says even if the figures are accurate, it's not known what proportion was due to actual fraud or breaches, or other reasons.

He's told Kristina Kukolja any data on student visa fraud collected by the immigration and education departments, as well as education providers, should be made public.
