Tony Abbott remains prime minister after a move to spill the Liberal leadership failed.

Liberal MPs on Monday voted 61-39 to defeat a move by two backbenchers.

Mr Abbott addressed his colleagues after the vote.

Chief government whip Philip Ruddock described the vote as "very clear" when he informed the waiting media of the result.
